Recycled Fashion Show

1

On Wednesday 15th May we took five year 8 girls to The Space in Wakefield to take part in Wakefield Councils annual Recycled Fashion show – an event that celebrates recycling across the district. The girls had spent the last four weeks designing and making their dress for the event.

The dress the girls had designed looked really professional. The theme they had chosen was the recycled bride, so they had made an outfit using recycled denim jeans to make a bodice with a corset style back using ties generously donated by the male members of the technology department – it was surprising what monstrosities were hidden away in the closets of Messer’s Ridgeway and Burgess! For the accessories they used recycled tin cans that had been gathered from around school and they were fashioned into an artificial bouquet and tiara.

The rehearsal went well, and for the main show in the evening the girls pulled out all the stops, competing well with schools that had attended last year. Although we didn’t come in the top three all the girls had a great time and are really looking forward to passing on what they learnt to next year’s team.

Community Spirit

The local community has been coming to terms with the tragedy of last Friday and the College has been no exception. On Monday morning we had extra support in place for those who needed it and we have maintained this throughout the week.

Students in our upper years were amongst those most affected and on Thursday in Post 16 assembly, some students sang “A Thousand Years” in tribute to Bethany. Although not a student at Minsthorpe, Bethany had a lot of friends at the college.

As part of the co-ordinated community response, we have brought forward our termly non-uniform day to May 17th and the proceeds will be donated to the respective Air Ambulance teams who responded to the accident. Please see our ‘Homepage’ for details.

Our thoughts, best wishes and prayers go out to Beth’s family and all those affected by this tragedy.

Hola Barcelona!

barca

During the Easter Holidays the Year 8 football squad went on a football tour to Barcelona. When we landed at Barcelona airport, the pilot thanked everyone for travelling with British Airways and then wished Minsthorpe Community College all the best in their football tour !!!

We had 3 tense and exciting games against the Spanish teams, the highlight being a 4-3 victory over Saint Feliu. This is the first time in eight years of running this trip that we have secured a victory. The squad should be very proud of this achievement.

We had a tour around the Nou Camp stadium, the home of Barcelona Football Club which included going into the changing rooms, going pitch side and going into the press box. We saw Barcelona beat Mallorca 5-0 in La Liga, what an experience this was sat in 90,000 seater stadium !!!.

We spent a day at Port Aventura, one of the biggest theme parks in Europe. We spent time playing golf, table tennis, snooker, water polo and also spent some time on La Ramblas bartering for gifts to take home to our friends and families.

The students that went were a credit to the college, their parents and themselves both on and off the pitch. Well done year 8 football squad, Mr Mann was very proud of the way you conducted yourselves.
